General information about the faculty
The development of chemical science and education in Volyn began in 1993, when the faculty of chemistry was established after the reorganization of the faculties of natural sciences and geography and of physics and mathematics. The first dean was appointed, Demchuk Volodymyr Vasyliovych, Ph.D. (Biology). Initially, the faculty had 2 departments – inorganic and physical chemistry, and organic and analytical chemistry. Thus, the education of students majoring in "Chemistry" began at Lesya’s University.
During 2001-2010, the faculty had 5 departments: general and inorganic chemistry, physical and colloid chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic and biological chemistry, ecology and environmental protection.
Since September 2010, the educational process has been provided by 4 departments – inorganic and physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and eco-technologies, organic and bio-organic chemistry, ecology and environmental protection.
During these years, graduates of the faculty had the opportunity to receive a diploma in "Chemistry" and "Ecology".
In 2013, specialty 161 "Chemical Technologies and Engineering" was added, and since 2016, enrollment is for education in specialty 014 "Secondary Education (Chemistry)". In 2018, the fifth new specialty 226 "Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy" was licensed.
Due to the expansion of the number of licensed specialties, in September 2019 the Faculty of Chemistry was renamed the Faculty of Chemistry, Ecology and Pharmacy, and the departments were reorganized. Currently, the educational process at the faculty is provided by 3 departments – chemistry and technology, organic chemistry and pharmacy, ecology and environmental protection.
The faculty owes its development to its deans:
1993–2011 – Demchuk Volodymyr Vasyliovych, Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. (Biology)
2010–2011 – Prof. Kormosh Zholt Oleksandrovych, Ph.D. (Chemistry)
2013–2018 – Parasyuk Oleg Vasylyovych, Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. (Chemistry)
since 2019 – Marushko Larysa Petrivna, Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. (Chemistry)
Educational work:
The educational process at the faculty is provided by two Doctors of Sciences, Professors; three Ph.D. Professors; nineteen Ph.D. Associate Professors; three Ph.D. without academic title.
The faculty has lecture halls, a computer class, and research laboratories for teaching students. Conditions have been created for research work: the student scientific society, students take part in Ukrainian and international scientific conferences.
Higher education students are trained in the following educational programs:
First level of higher education (bachelor's degree):
· Secondary education. Chemistry

Students of the faculty have the opportunity to participate in the double degree program (Ukraine-Poland) at the Jan Dlugosz University of Humanities and Natural Sciences (Czestochowa, Poland): students majoring in specialty 101 "Ecology" can obtain a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology, and students majoring in specialty 102 "Chemistry" can earn a bachelor's degree in specialty "Chemistry of Medicines".
Research activities:
Research at the departments of the faculty is conducted in the following main areas:
• Synthesis and properties of new quaternary chalcogenides and halides for optoelectronics and nonlinear optics.
• Electrochemical synthesis and research of micro- and nanochalcogenides.
• Landscape-ecological analysis of anthropogenically modified systems.
• Ecological monitoring of the current state and forecast of the dynamics of protected ecosystems in Volyn.
• Crystal chemistry of rare-earth chalcogenides.
• Search for new materials for alternative energy sources.
• Optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of biologically active and toxic substances.
• Synthesis and structural modification of new heterocyclic compounds based on thiobenzimidazole, 6-methyluracil, 2-thiohydantoine, imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole, 4-thiazolidones and investigation of their biological activity.
• Synthesis and modification of xanthene dyes, study of their properties.
• Extraction of biologically active substances from seeds of plants of the family Apiaceae, from medicinal plants of the family Asteraceae and the family Ericaceae, as well as the study of their antioxidant action in fatty systems.
• Search for new natural sources for chitosan production and investigation of its properties.
Researchers of the faculty received a number of state awards (Cabinet of Ministers Award for Young Scientists, President's Grant for Young Scientists). Staff of the faculty participate in the accomplishment of state-budget-financed scientific topics and grants.
Six student research groups and problem groups are active at the faculty. The faculty closely cooperates with the Volyn Regional Junior Academy of Sciences. The results of such cooperation are prizes for students of the sections "Chemistry", "Ecology", "Forestry", "Environmental Protection and Environmental Management" at the Regional and All-Ukrainian competitions of scientific work of pupils.
International activities:
The faculty fruitfully cooperates with educational and scientific institutions of Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, France and other countries, where instructors, graduate students and faculty members perform joint research.
