On June 29–30, the 2nd International Online Conference “Book in the Media – Media in the Book: market, technologies, consumption” was held in University.
The Department of Social Communications is among the co-organizers of the event together with colleagues from the Department of Informatics, Bibliology and Media Education of the Institute of Social Communication and Media Sciences of the Maria Curie-Sklódowska University in Lublin (Republic of Poland) (Instytut Nauk o Komunikacji Społecznej i Mediach UMCS), the Department of Media Communications of the Ukrainian Academy of Printing, Department of Social Communications and Information Activities of the Lviv Polytechnic National University.
For two days, scientists from higher education institutions, book publishers, experts in the media sphere, and the publishing industry of Ukraine and Poland discussed the issues of the mission of the book in a media-oriented society and the role of the mutual influence of the book and the media, how mobile technologies work in the publishing business, and how new media change the information space.
The head of the department, associate professor Olena Kosheliuk gave a welcome speech at the plenary session (the topic of her report was “A Ukrainian book during the war”). Professor Svitlana Kravchenko spoke about the latest trends in the children's book publishing market. Vice-rector for educational work and communication Nataliia Blahovirna highlighted the issue of Ukraine's image in the concepts of textbooks for the New Ukrainian School. Associate professor Nataliia Denysiuk presented book projects of the editorial office of “Monitor Wołyński” – a bilingual newspaper of the Polish community in Volyn. Associate Professor Oksana Kosiuk analyzed several aspects of Lesya Ukrainka's journalism. Associate Professor Nataliia Shulska informed about the art-book features as a special kind of book content. Associate Professor Maria Rozhylo demonstrated how media literacy is highlighted in books and digital media projects for children.
Students also had the floor to speak. The students of the “Journalism and Intercultural Communication” specialty presented their research findings and aroused great interest. Polina Zabolotna spoke about traditional and new ways of popularizing book products in the age of digital technologies. Roman Marchuk characterized the specifics of book popularization through films. Anastasia Basalka considered the toy book as a kind of children's publication.
The organizers of the conference expressed their hope to meet in a peaceful Ukraine after the victory to discuss the topics and issues outlined by the participants of the scientific discussion. The topical issues are mostly at the intersection of the publishing and media industries. Further research is needed to study new challenges in the development of the book market in Ukraine, Poland, and the world.
Some promising joint projects are supposed to be implemented in the framework of the international scientific cooperation between the Department of Social Communications of the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and the Institute of Social Communication and Media Sciences of the Maria Curie-Sklódowska University in Lublin (Republic of Poland).
