On October 8, Larysa Ivshyna, an honoured journalist of Ukraine, editor-in-chief of the "Den" newspaper, Honorary Professor of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, Doctor Honoris Causa of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, a public intellectual, visited Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. Larysa Oleksiivna is a professor at Department of Social Communications, which is the graduation department for Specialty 061 "Journalism" at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University.
Her visit was an important event for the University community, especially for the students of Faculty of Philology and Journalism, which served the basis for her lecture. In addition, Larysa Oleksiivna met Rector of the University, Anatolii Tsos, and visited Medical Faculty.
In her lecture, Larysa Ivshyna emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and understanding the modern history of Ukraine. She underlined that history should be passed down regardless of the age of generations, as it is the basis of national identity and collective memory. “What we call ‘historical memory’ and what we call ‘modern history of Ukraine’ should be passed down regardless of one's time of birth. It must live,” Ms. Larysa addressed the students.
In her lecture, Larysa Ivshyna also shared deep thoughts on the importance of language and cultural heritage in the formation of the Ukrainian nation: “In one film about Bucha, there was such a frame, an inscription on the wall: ‘Kyiv is the mother of Russian cities’, and in our book ten years ago it was written that the sensation is not that Ukraine is not russia, but the sensation is that russia is not Rus. And the book ‘The Power of the Soft Sign…’ is exactly about this.”
In addition to the lecture, Larysa Ivshyna presented her books “Ukraine Incognita”, “The Power of a Soft Sign…” and “The Crown, or the Heritage of the Kingdom of Rus” to the students. All interested parties had the opportunity to learn about the publications and ask questions, having the opportunity to hear detailed answers from an experienced journalist.
The event was also attended by other representatives of the University, including Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Communications Natalia Blagovirna, Dean of Faculty of Philology and Journalism Liliia Lavrynovych, and Head of Department of Social Communications Olena Kosheliuk.
This meeting became a valuable experience for students and lecturers, contributing to the discussion of modern challenges in the field of journalism, media and historical memory of Ukraine.
