Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University is now in the list of four universities of Ukraine that will teach the  "Data Journalism" course.

This is reported in the Ministry of Digital Transformation.

Data journalism is a global media trend. Journalists, investigators in particular, use open data as a basis for their materials: city budgets, officials' declarations, court decisions, information about developers, and more. However, being able to work with open data requires special knowledge and skills.

One of the key tasks of the Ministry of Digital Transformation within the framework of the development of the field of open data is to create a complete ecosystem of open data education.

Therefore, this year the modular course "Data Journalism" will be taught in four more institutions of higher education:

- Ivan Franko Lviv National University;

- Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University;

- Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University;

- Ukrainian Catholic University.

Due to this course, the universities will be able to train a new generation of specialists capable of working with large volumes of data. Eight modules will be devoted to:

- concepts, practices, regulatory and legal basis of open data;

- search and use of various data sources;

- basics of working with machine-readable information;

- means of data work automatisation;

- the key concept of data journalism;

- skills of working with public registers with the help of АРI;

- practical cases of using open data in journalism;

- data visualisation tools and methods.

The presentation of the "Data Journalism" course was held during a press conference at Ivan Franko Lviv National University. The event was attended by:

- Yanina Lyubiva, open data expert of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine;

- Nadiia Konashchuk, head of the open data direction of the "Support of Digital Transformation" project;

- Maksym Stoliarchuk, Head of the Digital Development Department of Lviv Regional Military Administration;

- Andrii Hukaliuk, First Vice-Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv;

- Volodymyr Kachmar, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work and Social Issues and Development of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Open data was taught in Ukraine for the first time in 2023 — for master students of Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman (KNEU). The modular course was part of the "Digitalisation of the Economy" KNEU course.

The course was developed with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine together with the "Supporting Digital Transformation" project , financed by USAID and UK Dev. The partner in the project implementation is the Office of Effective Regulation of BRDO.
