Training on Psychological Support for Volunteers Working with Children is in Progress at the University

Training on psychological support for Ukrainian volunteers working with children is in progress at Lesya Ukrainka University. A delegation of professors from Seattle Pacific University – Dr. Amy Mezoulis and Christopher Tobey – visited the university as part of this training.

In the halls of the university library, American specialists worked with psychologists, teachers, medical workers, chaplains, policemen, rescuers, volunteers, and all those interested, sharing their knowledge and personal experience with them.

Dr. Christopher Tobey is a licensed private clinical social worker and psychologist practicing clinical psychology in Washington, D.C. He received his Bachelor's degree from Seattle University, his Master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan, and his Doctorate degree in family clinical psychology from Seattle Pacific University.

Dr. Tobey has ten years of experience working in residential in-patient treatment facilities, where he provides services to both children and adolescents. He has been in private practice in Anacortes, Washington, since 1992.

Dr. Tobey is a member of several councils and committees, among which are Northwest Association of Private Behavioral Health Professionals, Skagit County Commissioners Mental Health Advisory Council, Skagit County Child Advocacy Team, and PsyCorps: Psychology Support International.

Dr. Mezoulis is a licensed psychologist who received her Bachelor's degree from Harvard University and her Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She completed internships at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle and at the University of Washington/Seattle Children's Hospital. She is currently teaching at the faculty of Seattle Pacific University, where she heads the doctoral program, supervises doctoral students, and teaches courses in adolescent development, diagnosis, and assessment.

Dr. Mezoulis' research is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Association for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, and the American Psychological Association. Her areas of expertise include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating behaviors, suicidality and self-harming, trauma, substance use, and adolescent development. Dr. Mezoulis' approach to therapy focuses on improving stress control, developing skills of emotion regulation and control, reducing depression and anxiety symptoms, refining nutrition and sleep, and overcoming trauma or difficult life situations.

The participants of the training were satisfied with the knowledge obtained at the training and enjoyed communication with foreign professionals.
