From November 19 to 23, 2023, the National University «Lviv Polytechnic» hosted the Ukrainian Football Cup among female teams of higher education institutions.
Our football players confidently overcame the group stage, defeating all three opponents, such as Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University (4:2), Lviv State University of Physical Culture (6:0) and Sumy State University (6:0).
According to the results of the three rounds, the team of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University took first place in the group and, according to the regulations, in the finals, competed against the winner of the other group, the team of Uman State Pedagogical University named after Pavlo Tychyna. The main time ended in a draw 0:0. In the penalty shootout, Uman women won with a score of 2:0. Despite the loss in the final, our team achieved a historic result for female football at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University.
Our team was supported at the competition Rector Anatolii Tsos, Vice-Rector for Educational Work and Communication Nataliia Blahovirna, Dean of Faculty of Physical Culture, Sports and Health Vasyl Pantik.
Oleh Bortnik, the team coach, shared his impressions of the competition: «The level of the competition was high. It is pleasing that the student teams are getting stronger. I am not 100 % satisfied with the result, because we could have taken the first place, we were stronger than the opponent in many aspects of the game. It is a pity. It seems that before the tournament the places were predetermined. In my opinion, the judges took away the victory from us. The girls are very upset, but I am grateful to them for their fight.»
The player of the team Anastasiia Dovhanyk said that the players are more persistent than ever to improve the result in the future: «The tournament went well, there were good teams and there was a competition. In the final, fortune turned away from us, the referee made many biased decisions. Regular time ended in a draw, and penalty kicks are a lottery. We were unlucky. We did our best in every game. We could not care less about the opponent’s level. I am sure that we will be determined for the next tournaments and will become stronger. Unfortunately, it was not possible to take the first place, but it is still to come.»
