The Department of the Ukrainian Language is one of the structural subdivisions of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. It has been established in 1970 as a result of the reorganisation of the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Literature. Over the past 55 years, the department's educational and research activities have been associated with the dedicated work of its academic staff, who have ensured its formation, scientific and professional development, and currently continue to creatively expand and deepen its linguistic traditions, affirm and supplement its scientific achievements.

L. Rozhylo, a Candidate of Philological Sciences and Associate Professor, was the first head of the Department. Later, the position was alternately held by Associate Professors H. Rashchynska and V.Holoiukh, Professor I. Vykhovanets, Associate Professor L. Pavlenko, and Professor M. Mirchenko. 

Currently, N. KostusiakDoctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, is the Head of the Department, who continues and develops the glorious traditions of her predecessors.

The Department's academic staff over the years included H. Arkushyn, V. Holiuk, O. Mykhalevych, V. Makovetskyi, H. Karashchuk, V.Tur, A. Dzhura (Yaremko), N. Polishchuk, A. Medynska, V. Kravchuk, N. Blahovirna, O. Handziuk, L. Derkach.

Currently, there are seven Doctors of Philological Sciences, Professors in the Department: N.Danyliuk, M. Zhuikova, N. Kostusiak, T. Masytska, O. Mezhov, I. Melnyk, M. Mirchenko and three Candidates of Philological Sciences, Associate Professors: Yu. Hrytsevych, O. Pryimachok, A. Yavorskyi, R. Zinchuk.

The Lutsk Grammar School is a team of Doctors and Candidates of Philological Sciences united by a common goal - the study of grammatical units and categories of the Ukrainian language. The activities of the school are based on the concept of functional-categorical grammar, which has been tested in modern linguistic Ukrainian studies, the theoretical foundations of which were suggested by I.   Vykhovanets. The scientific school is distinguished by the innovation of ideas, panoramic, deep and multidirectional study of the grammatical system of the modern Ukrainian literary language.

The Head of the Scientific School is M. Mirchenko, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor. Representatives of the scientific school are members of the Department of Ukrainian Language and Linguistic Didactics, Doctors of Philological Sciences, Professors N. Kostusiak, T. Masytska, O.Mezhov, and I. Melnyk.

The Department also has a scientific school The Language of Folklore and Works of Ukrainian Writers” led by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor N. Danyliuk and the Research School of Ethnolinguistics led by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor M. Zhuikova.

 The lectures of the Department of Ukrainian Language and Linguistic Didacticsserve as academic advisors of theses for the degree of Candidate of Philology (Doctor of Philosophy) and Doctor of Philology. The teaching staff of the Department is actively involved in the work of one-time and permanent specialized academic councils.

Professors Yu. Hromyk, N. Kostusiak and Associate Professor R. Zinchuk are academic advisors of PhD candidates. Professors N. Danyliuk and N. Kostusiak are scientific advisors of future Doctors of Philology.

The Western Polissia Onomastic and Dialectological Centre of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism is a linguistic laboratory for studying the peculiarities of the dialects and onomastic vocabulary of the Western Polissia regionand adjacent areas. The centre has been founded by Hryhorii Arkushyn, a Ukrainian linguist, Doctor of Philology, Professor, author of more than 20 books and 200 articles on dialectology and onomastics.

Lecturers of the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Linguistic Didactics, together with the University of Warsaw (Republic of Poland) and several Ukrainian universities, held the II International Scientific and Practical Online Conference ‘Ukrainian Language in the Latest Scientific Paradigms at Lesya Ukrainka National University (1-2 June 2023). Also, they were co-organizers several other scientific events.

Prof. Yu. Hromyk participated in the implementation of the national project ‘Lesya Ukrainka's Works. The Complete Collection of Academic of Lesya Ukrainka’s Works’. Currently, together with Associate Professors A. Yavorskyi and Yu. Hrytsevych, is involved in the project to prepare the Collected Works of Olena Pchilka in 12 volumes.

Lecturers of the Department organize advanced training courses for educators: scientific and practical seminars ‘Innovative Methods of Teaching the Ukrainian Language in Modern Higher and Secondary Schools’ (2019, 2020), ‘Ukrainian Language and Literary Education: Challenges and Perspectives’ (together with lecturers of the Department of Ukrainian Literature, 2023).

The members of the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Linguistic Didactics cooperate with the Volyn Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education: they conduct lectures to teachers of Ukrainian language and literature at the advanced training courses, to students - winners of the III stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Ukrainian Language and Literature; conduct webinars and training sessions for language teachers at the advanced training courses organised by the Educational and Research Institute of Continuing Education of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, etc.

Lecturers of the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Linguistic Didactics have headed and were the members of the jury of various competitions and olympiads.
