On June, 5th, 2015, the EENU academic community witnessed a truly significant event – a performance directed by a foreign professor. John McCabe-Juhnke, Ph.D., Professor of Communication Arts, Visiting Fulbright Scholar in Ukraine, has been director of American Theater Club in our University this 2014–2015 academic year. So the students and teachers were happy to know that John was not only a brilliant scholar and instructor as he had held lectures in psycholinguistics for the EENU psychology and applied linguistics students, but also a very talented director. He has been directing plays in his home Bethel College, North Newton (USA) for many years.

Undoubtedly, he has hit the mark with his theater version of John Cheever’s The Enormous Radio now. The play was certainly inventive and original. As the poster read, it was adapted for the stage and was a chamber theater production. This was a deeply satisfying production, in which the director (who also was one of the actors!) grasped both the psychology of actors and the stage of the EENUCenter for Culture and Recreation with absolute authority. The troupe consisted of the Psychology Faculty and Institute of Foreign Philiogy undergraduate and graduate students. Yulia Tsyos’, Natalia Chmil’, Viktoria Dryhaniuk, Maryan Melnyk demostrated both English language skills and actor mental discipline on the stage. Moreover, every role here seemed new and worth of attention. So the triumph was not only John’s.

The audience joined the director and actors for a discussion after the performance. The event also had a charitable aspect, since the American organizer suggested that all donations be directed on purchasing books for children of patriot soldiers in Eastern Ukraine.
