Full 14-volume Lesya Ukrainka’s Works Collection Now in Brazil

The full 14-volume Lesya Ukrainka's works collection compiled Lesya UkrainkaVolyn National University was transferred to the library fund of Lesya Ukrainka Saturday School of the Ukrainian Society of Brazil (Curitiba).

The Ukrainian Society of Brazil was founded in 1922. It is there that Lesya Ukrainka Saturday School functions, organised by Women's Organization including women of Ukrainian and other origins interested in the culture of Ukraine and preoccupied with its preservation.

Women's Organization was founded in 1924 as a branch of the Ukrainian Society of Brazil (formerly the Ukrainian Union of Brazil) aimed at maintaining the traditions brought by Ukrainian ancestors to Brazil and providing assistance to the families of Ukrainian immigrants.

Women's Organization sees the preservation of language and culture as its primary task. It manages to embody this through Lesya Ukrainka Saturday School officially founded by enthusiastic women in the early 70s.

At the school, volunteer teachers are persistently trying to spark a heartfelt love of Ukraine not only in the children of Ukrainian origin, but also their parents. Once a week,  5 to 14 year-olds  attend classes in Ukrainian studies, learn the language (elementary level), dancing and singing, various aspects of Ukrainian culture, the history of Ukraine and immigration to Brazil, and also represent the elements of Ukrainian life through theatrical productions.

As of April 27, 1996, Saturday School was officially named Lesya Ukrainka Saturday School in honour of the brilliant writer.

During the scholarly internship at the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (Curitiba), a responsible mission was carried out on behalf of Volyn philologists to present the Complete Academic Collection of Lesya Ukrainka's Works.

The presentation emphasized the value of this publication for all Ukrainians, Lesya Ukrainka's biographical moments were update, and her main commandments.

Svitlana Kryvoruchko, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Head of Department of Foreign Literature and Slavic Languages named after Professor Mykhailo Hetmanets of Hryhoriy Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, invited Professor of Unicentro University in Irata (Brazil) Svitlana Kryvoruchko attending the event, emphasized the importance of the presented publication and expressed her professional gratitude to Volyn colleagues for painstaking scholarly work.

Mrs. Svitlana read the poems "I knew that..." and "Female portrait" and performed the song called "Kolyskova. The sun set long ago" to Lesya Ukrainka's words, and this gave an opportunity to experience the beauty of Ukrainian words and songs. These poems and the song were translated by Svitlana Kryvoruchko into Portuguese so that the Brazilian audience could better grasp the essence of the poetic texts and subtexts of Lesya Ukrainka.

Sincere words of gratitude to Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, in particular to the team of philologists who worked on this publication, were expressed by Head of Women's Organization, Hanna Mazepa, who wished everyone VICTORY, PEACE and GOD'S SUPPORT!
