Five students of Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University will receive scholarship from the Eternal Foundation of Stepan and Yevheniia Radion (Melbourne, Australia).
We will briefly outline the history of the scholarship programme foundation. Stepan Radion was born in 1921 in the village of Silne, Kivertsi district, Volyn region. In 1944 he had to immigrate to Australia. He was a journalist, a writer, a scientist, a bibliographer, a chronicle of Australian Ukrainian studies. For his scientific and literary work he was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Arizona (USA), he also became a full member of the Volyn Research Institute in Winnipeg (Canada), and in 1994 he became Honorary Professor of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University. After his death his son, Yurii Radion, founded a charitable foundation and a percentage of savings was pledged to gifted students of our University every year. For the first time Students received the scholarship in 2012.
The announcement of the competition was published on Facebook in the Faculty of Philology and Journalism group, in the groups of the Faculty in Telegram and Viber social networks. Potential scholarship holders had the possibility to submit their documents, in such a way applying to participate in the competition.
After assessing the achievements of students, a panel of judges made a decision to recommend awarding personal scholarships to those competition participants who have the greatest achievements in the field of study, research and promotion of the Ukrainian language and literature. These are five students of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism, namely:
Anna Mykhailenko (Ukr-51M) is a first year master-student of Ukrainian philology department of Faculty of Philology and Journalism. She is doing her Master’s degree to obtain the qualifications of a teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature and foreign literature. Anna is responsible and diligent. Her high level of philological qualifications is certified with high marks she gets for credits and exams. During her study at university she has been developing her skills and broadening her knowledge with the help of self-education and doing research. According to the results of the winter exam session 2021/2022 Anna had the highest position in the ranking among the students of Specialty 035 Philology (Ukrainian Language and Literature), which is why she was awarded a personal scholarship named after Serhii Yefremov.
Anna actively participates if faculty events, namely: she takes part in literary and art events organised by the University and the city, in particular, St. Anrew’s parties, literary festivals “Frontera” and “Book Forum Lviv”. She is a regular member of the Anonymous Authors Club.
Anna is an initiator and organizer of the Book club for children (group reading and discussion of works by children’s writers Astrid Lindgren, Larysa Pysmenna, Vsevolod Nestaiko, etc.).
In 2020 she successfully finished doing summer online-school course of would-be philologist “Academic writing and righteousness: in simple terms about the complicated” (August 1–10). In 2021 she did the course “Online-course of editing” from Litosvita.

Nadia Kostiuchok (Ukr-512ME) is a first year master-student of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism, Specialty 014 Secondary Education (Ukrainian Language and Literature. World Literature).
During her university study she has been a diligent student and obtained profound theoretical and practical knowledge in subjects of general and professional cycle. She is doing well in all academic subjects of Bachelor’s curriculum (diploma with honors, GPA – 93; out of the exam marks – 29 “Excellent” marks and 2 – “Very Good” marks). The first term of her Master’s degree she got 3 excellent and 1 very good marks at the exams. Doing her bachelor degree, as well as Master’s degree, Nadia receives an increased scholarship and comes first or second in the rating.

She always diligently fulfills her public duties. Nadia can speak English, she is sociable, responsible, initiative. She is respected by both students and lecturers.
Polina Zabolotna (Zhurn-37) studies to become a journalist at Specialty “Journalism and Intercultural Communication”. She is an extremely smart, responsible, sociable and creative person.
Polina is an excellent student. At the same time, she works as an editor of “Nivroku”, an information portal of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism » https://ffj.in.ua/. She also has achievements in scientific and cultural artistic fields, she actively promotes the Ukrainian language, is involved in volunteering and public work.
Besides being a chief-editor of “Nivroku”, a students’ site, Poline Zabolotna is also an author of publications on literary-artistic topics on faculty Internet-resource (https://ffj.in.ua); she writes articles for socio-political magazine “Volyn newspaper” (https://volga.lutsk.ua; the article “ Is there and whose is “Crimea issue”? is worth paying attention”); within the scope of International project “Media-dialogue” she published several informational text- and photo-pieces on the site of the project (http://mediadialogue.eu/en/?s=Polina+Zabolotna).
Polina Zabolotna has considerable scientific achievements: she took part in All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference “Modern Science: Communication Aspects of the 21th century” (a speech and abstract publication: Literary-artistic festivals as a factor of intercultural communication formation in Ukraine. P. 185-189.); she had a scientific article published (co-authored) in the professional journal in philology and journalism (Original Approaches to Books Popularizing: Interaction of the Author, Editor, Publisher, Literary Manager. P. 210215); she has also prepared an article “Convergence as the main feature of modern means to popularize printed books” to have it published in the Youth Scientific Bulletin of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism «Scripta Manent. 2022».
It is also worth mentioning that Polina Zabolotna actively participates in promotion of the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian media-content within the scope of the international project “Media-dialogue 2021: the conflict sensitivity and research into conflicts”, which took place with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany and the Embassy of Germany in Ukraine. Together with other participants from Ukraine, Germany, Georgia, Armenia, Belorussia and Moldova Polina took part in trainings and workshops; won (1st and 3rd places in different nominations) in a cartoon competition which was held during the “Media-dialogue”.
The student also participated and won awards in professional, language-literary, cultural-artistic contests, in particular, in the Competition in media-literacy for the youth within the project “Learn and differentiate: info-media literacy” in the nomination “Best video-materials” at the festival “Law and Humanity: Mediafest 2020”; in the project of the Department of Ukrainian Literature of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University “Listening to Ukrainian (literature) / Ukrainian (WORD)”: audio- and video-reading of the Ukrainian literature works, letters, memoirs, diaries of Ukrainian writers”; in the educational project “Movovyshkil Pravopysnyi (Spelling learning and training)”; in the quest dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka Days and the 80-th Anniversary of the philology school (1st place in the nomination “The First Seeker”); in creation of the book-trailer (in collaboration with group-mates) on the book “Oblivion” by Tetiana Maliarchuk, etc.
On a voluntary basis Polina helped organizers of the literary-artistic festival “Frontera” (Lutsl, 2019–2020). When Russo-Ukrainian war started, Polina joined the voluntary movement: she works in volunteer headquarters, takes part in the organization of reception and support of temporarily displaced persons, in the collection of humanitarian aid to the soldiers of the Armed Forces.
Hanna Dikhtiaruk (PL-36E) is a student of the Specialty 014 Secondary Education (Polish Language and Literature), she is one of the most active and brightest students at the Faculty. During her study Hanna has been a diligent and well-organised student, who actively participates in educational process. Besides high grades in professional disciplines, Hanna applies her knowledge in practical activity, actively participating in volunteering connected to translation (regular translation for delegations of different levels from Poland). She is a co-organiser of numerous events in Polish Club (a joint project of Polish Studies at Lesya Ukrainka University and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lutsk). Hanna participated in youth semester exchange at Pomeranian Academy in Slupsk and a number of scientific and scientific-practical conferences (namely, II International scientific-methodical seminar “Lutsk dialogues with Polish culture – 2021”, at Festival of Science at the Faculty of Philology and Journalism, etc.) She is a member of a specialized express-course from the Translation Agency ADMIRAL, October 18–22 2021, the project of dual education on the basis of the “Centre of Tourist Information and Services”, January, 2021.

Veronika Pyroh (Ukr-21) is a second-year student of the Specialty 035 Philology (Ukrainian Language and Literature). She showed her potential to scientific research being a first-year student. Doing her individual scientific-research task in the Ukrainian folklore, she found valuable respondents who told her in detail about the methods of implementing collectivization in the Volyn village of Hubyn. Recorded and edited materials served a basis for her speech “Colhosp as economic form of the Soviet terror” at 20th International scientific-practical Internet-conference in Ukrainian Studies “Dialogues of languages – dialogue of cultures. Ukraine and the world”, which was held in Munich in October 28-31, 2021. The report got rave reviews. None of the participants of the distant discussion guessed that it was the research of a first-year student. The report was published first as an abstract (Pyroh V. Colhosp as economic form of the Soviet terror in the memoirs of eyewitnesses of older generation. Modern philology: prospective and priority directions of scientific research. Odesa, 2021. P. 64-66), and then as an article.
Veronica is an active participant of various artistic events (“Philology is always about love: from the past to the future”), she promotes Ukrainian traditions, the biography and works of Ukrainian writers are not left out either, she focused in particular on Lesya Ukrainka and Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovianenko.
Veronica proves that her successful debut at the international level was not accidental. Now in her free from studying and volunteering time she works at the new topic which will published as soon as the appropriate conditions appear.
