The Ukrainian Language

The Department of Ukrainian Language is the center of scientific, educational and cultural life of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. It has its own unique history and deep traditions: first as part of a single unit i.e. Department of Ukrainian Language and Literature, and later today, as a separate important link in higher education. Its more than 50 years of activity are connected with the hard work of teachers who have ensured the formation, scientific and professional growth of the department and who today creatively expand and deepen its linguistic traditions, supplement and affirm scientific achievements. The current Department of History and Culture of the Ukrainian Language and the Department of Social Communications (until 2013 ‒ the Department of Publishing and Editing and Journalism) separated from the structure of the department.

The first head of the department was Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor L. P. Rozhylo. Other heads were also professionals, they are associate professors G. M. Rashchynska and V. I. Holoiukh, professor I. R. Vykhovanets, associate professor L. P. Pavlenko, professor M. V. Mirchenko, who alternately held this position, determining the continuous movement of the department to scientific and pedagogical growth. Today, the head of the department is Professor N. M. Kostusiak who continues and develops the glorious traditions of her predecessors.

V. S. Goliuk, O. F. Mikhalevich, V. I. Makovetskyi, H. F. Karashchuk, V. S. Tur, A. S. Dzhura (Yaremko), N. M. Polishchuk, A. V. Medynska, H. L. Arkushyn, V. V. Kravchuk, N. B. Blahovirna worked as teachers of the department in different years. For a long time the position of senior laboratory assistant of the department was held by V. L. Starchevska, now it is held by R. M. Voloshchuk.

Seven doctors of sciences, professors work at the department today, they are N. O. Danyliuk, M. V. Zhuikova, N. M. Kostusiak, T. Y. Masytska, O. H. Mezhov, I. A. Melnyk, M.V. Mirchenko and three candidates of sciences, associate professors: O. M. Handziuk, L. M. Derkach, R. S. Zinchuk.

The Lutsk Grammar School operates at the Department of Ukrainian Language, it is a team of doctors for candidates of philological sciences, united by a common idea i.e. the study of grammatical units and categories of the Ukrainian language. The activity of the scientific school is based on the concept of functional-categorical grammar tested in modern linguistics, the theoretical principles of which were proposed by I. R. Vykhovanets. The scientific school is distinguished by innovative ideas, panorama, depth and multi-vector study of the grammatical system of modern Ukrainian literary language. Head of the scientific school is M. V. Mirchenko, Doctor of Philology, Professor. The scientific school is worthily represented by members of the Department of Ukrainian Language: Doctors of Philology, Professors N. M. Kostusiak, T. Y. Masytska, O. H. Mezhov, I. A. Melnyk, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor O. M. Handziuk.

The department also has a scientific school “Language of Folklore and Works of Ukrainian Writers” by Doctor of Philology, Professor N. O. Danyliuk and a scientific school of ethnolinguistics by Doctor of Philology, Professor M. V. Zhuikova.

Західнополіський ономастико-діалектологічний центр факультету філології та журналістики – мовознавча лабораторія з вивчення особливостей говірок та онімної лексики Західного Полісся і суміжних ареалів. Засновник центру – Григорій Аркушин, український мовознавець, доктор філологічних наук, професор, автор більше як 20 книг та 200 статей, присвячених питанням діалектології та ономастики.
