About the department
The scientific activity of the teaching staff is realized on the following topics: history of culture of Volyn; spiritual culture of Ukrainians in ethnic western lands; archeology of Volyn; Volyn studies; history and culture of Ukraine; history of Volyn in 20-40s of the XX century; Ukrainian village in the XX century; development of education in Ukraine in the second half of the XX century; migration processes in Ukraine.
History of Department
The Department has a long history, which is linked with the history of our University. The Department of History was established in May 1946, and Dmytro Ogarin was appointed as a head of the Department. P. Babliak, V. Vantsevych, E. Vynogradov, O. Demeshyna, M. Kasich, M. Koshel, O. Moskalenko worked on it.
From November 1, 1951, the Department of History was headed by Marko Lyzohub. This position was held by Pavlo Kozik, Volodymyr Sukhariev, Pavlo Denysovets in the following years.
In 1957–1972, the Department was headed by Roman Okseniuk, who was transferred to Lutsk from the Zhytomyr Pedagogical Institute. R. Okseniuk made a noticeable mark in the development of local history and historical science in Volyn. In particular, he published a thorough monograph «Essays on the History of Volyn (1861–1939)» (Lviv, 1970) and headed the author's team to write the work «History of Towns and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR. Volyn region» (Kyiv, 1970).
Dmytro Babych, Ivan Haidai, Pavlo Kozik, Vadym Kud, Marko Lyzohub, Oleksii Mykhailiuk, Dmytro Oharin, Mykhailo Oskolkov, Pavlo Serpeninov, Petro Smiian, Volodymyr Sukhariev, Valentyna Sukharieva, Nataliia Khmara, Volodymyr Tsiatko, Varvara Shyrokova worked at the Department of History for many years.
On September 1, 1971, the Department of History was divided into the Department of History of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the Ukrainian SSR and the Department of General History. Talented scientist and pedagogue Oleksii Mykhailiuk became the head of the Department of History of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR.
The Department was headed by the well-known scientist and mentor of young people Petro Smiian in 1975–1985. He studied the history of Zakarpattia in the ХХ century, together with a group of historians of the Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute participated in writing «History of Volyn from ancient times to the present day» (Lviv, 1988). Petro Smiyan and Oleksiy Mykhailyuk are the first Volyn historians who received the degree of Doctor of History.
A new addition came to the department: Hennadii Bondarenko, Oleksandr Havryliuk, Lidiia Haidai, Halyna Panyshko, Oleksandr Petrashek, Mykola Pivnytskyi, Volodymyr Pryshliak, Vasyl Prokopchuk, Oleksandr Riazantsev, Zinaida Savych, Yaroslav Shabala and others who gained teaching experience and fruitfully engaged in scientific work.
The Department of History of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR was headed by Professor Oleksii Mykhailiuk in 1985–1990. D. Barabasevych, H. Bondarenko, O. Havryliuk, L. Haidai, V. Holovko, O. Hubenko, O. Kidyba, I. Kichyi, S. Kravchuk, V. Kud, H. Panyshko, O. Petrashek, M. Pivnytskyi, V. Pryshliak, V. Prokopchuk, O. Riazantsev, R. Tertychna, A. Tkachuk, Z. Savych, K. Smiian, P. Smiian, O. Fed, P. Fedorchuk, Ya. Shabala have worked under his leadership.
The democratic transformations in society that unfolded during Gorbachev's «Perestroika» made a deep impact on the development of education, the activities of higher education institutions, the content and directions of research., the Department of History of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR was divided into two departments: the Department of History of the USSR and the Department of History of the Ukrainian SSR (renamed in Department of History of Ukraine in 1991) in September 1990.
From 1991 to 2001 the Department of History of Ukraine was headed by PhD in History, Associate Professor (later Professor) Ivan Kichiy. At different times at the Department have worked: G. Bondarenko, P. Borkovsky, A. Velychko, O. Gavrilyuk, S. Gavrilyuk, L. Gaidai, O. Kidyba, L. Kryzhanivska, V. Kud, M. Kucherepa, M. Kuchynko, O. Lenartovych, Ya. Matskevich, D. Pavlenko, G. Panyshko, O. Petrashek, M. Pivnytsky, L. Ponedelnyk, V. Pryshlyak, V. Prokopchuk, I. Phydenko, O. Remenyaka, O. Ryazantsev, Z. Savych, V. Svistun, O. Solovyov, R. Strilka, P. Fedorchuk, D. Tsymbalyuk, J. Shabala, A. Schwab, G. Yukhimenko, I. Yakushev and others. Laboratory assistants of the Department were O. Dvoininova, V. Kovalchuk, O. Kushpetyuk, V. Popovych.
In 1992 the Department of History of Slavic Peoples was opened. It was headed by Doctor of History, Professor Oleksii Mykhailiuk. In 1993 Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University was established on the basis of Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute. In 1993 Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Volodymyr Baran became the Head of the Department of History of Slavs (he received the degree of Doctor of History in 1997, the academic title of Professor in 2002). In February 1994 the Department of Archeology (later Archeology and Source Studies) was established at the Faculty of History. It was headed by PhD in History, Associate Professor Mykhailo Kuchynko (he received the degree of Doctor of History in 1999, the academic title of Professor in 2002). Hennadii Bondarenko, Alla Dmytrenko, Mariana Myts, Valentyna Nadolska, Hryhorii Okhrimenko, Serhii Panyshko, Volodymyr Sobchuk, Valentyna Petrovych and senior laboratory assistant Zoriana Kuchynko worked at the Department in different years. Mykhailo Kuchynko launched systematic excavations in Volyn, became the founder of a modern archeological school in the region, organized archeological practice for students and established a museum of archeology at the Faculty of History.
The Department of History of Ukraine was reorganized in December 1994. The Department of National History was established on its basis. The Department of National History was headed by PhD in History, Professor Bohdan Zabrovarnyi, former rector of the Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute. P. Borkovskyi, O. Havryliuk, V. Dmytruk, M. Kucherepa, V. Prokopchuk, O. Remeniaka, R. Strilka, D. Tsymbaliuk, laboratory assistants V. Popovych i V. Lytvyniuk have worked under his leadership. Employees of these departments taught the history of Ukraine both at the Faculty of History and at other faculties of the university.
As a result of another reorganization carried out in April 2001, the Department of Ancient and Modern History of Ukraine and the Department of Contemporary History of Ukraine were formed. The head of the first was PhD in History, Professor Bohdan Zabrovarnyi, and the second – Doctor of History, Professor Volodymyr Baran. S. Havryliuk, L. Haidai, N. Kind-Voitiuk, H. Panyshko, V. Pryshliak, Ya. Shabala and senior laboratory assistant V. Popovych worked at the Department of Ancient and Modern History of Ukraine, and at the Department of Contemporary History of Ukraine – O. Havryliuk, O. Lenartovych, V. Kud, M. Kucherepa, L. Poniedielnyk, I. Pkhydenko, A. Shvab and senior laboratory assistant R. Levchuk.
In March 2008 the Department of Archeology and Special Historical Disciplines and the Department of Documentation and Museum Affairs were established on the basis of the Department of Archeology and Source Studies. In August 2010 on the basis of three departments (Archeology and Special Historical Disciplines; Ancient and Modern History of Ukraine; Contemporary History of Ukraine) were formed the Department of Archeology, Ancient and Medieval History of Ukraine, headed by Doctor of History, Professor Mykhailo Kuchynko, and later – Doctor of History, Professor Yaroslav Shabala, and the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Ukraine, headed by Doctor of History, Professor Volodymyr Baran.
At the Department of Archeology, Ancient and Medieval History of Ukraine have worked: H. Bondarenko, L. Haidai, V. Denysiuk, O. Kalishchuk, H. Maleonchuk, H. Okhrimenko, S. Panyshko, V. Pryimak, I. Rudianyn and senior laboratory assistants Z. Kuchynko ta V. Popovych, and at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Ukraine: O. Havryliuk, N. Kind-Voitiuk, V. Kud, M. Kucherepa, O. Lenartovych, L. Poniedielnyk, V. Pryshliak, I. Pkhydenko, A. Shvab and senior laboratory assistants R. Levchuk, I. Savytska, O. Levenets, Ya. Sakharuk i S. Fishchuk.
In 2020, the Department of Archeology, Ancient and Medieval History of Ukraine was united with the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Ukraine – the Department of History of Ukraine and Archeology was established, headed by Doctor of History, Professor Volodymyr Baran. Professors (O. Kalishchuk, M. Kucherepa, M. Kuchynko, O. Lenartovych, A. Shvab), associate professors (O. Havryliuk, V. Denysiuk, N. Kind-Voitiuk, S. Panyshko, L. Poniedielnyk, V. Pryshliak, I. Rudianyn), senior lecturers (H. Maleonchuk, O. Muliar, V. Pryimak, S. Stepaniuk), assistant (V. Baiuk), senior laboratory assistants (Z. Kuchynko, V. Popovych, S. Fishchuk) teach at the department.
Today the Department has scientific schools established by professors and associate professors, who, in particular, were consultants and supervisors of dissertations: professors V. Baran, M. Kucherepa, M. Kuchynko, A. Schwab, associate professors O. Havryliuk, V. Pryshliak and others. The holding of the international scientific seminar «Ukraine-Poland: Difficult Issues» in 1996–2006. It was headed from the Ukrainian side by Professor M. Kucherepa. It played an important role in the scientific activity of the Department. As a result of professional discussions 11 volumes of materials related to topical issues of Ukrainian-Polish relations of the ХХ century were published.
Professor V. Baran has been the head of the Department for 28 years (Department of History of Slavs, Department of Modern History of Ukraine, Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Ukraine, Department of History of Ukraine and Archeology). He conducts significant scientific, teaching and organizational work. For many years he was a member of the specialized scientific councils at the Ivan Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the National University «Ostroh Academy», Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. He was an opponent in the defense of dozens of dissertations, including in 2011–2021 – 13 doctoral and 18 candidate. He is a member of the editorial boards of the scientific journals «Communism» and «Memory and Justice» of the Institute of National Memory of the Republic of Poland. He was awarded the honorary title of «Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine».
Thanks to the persistent efforts of many generations of employees, the Department has made a significant contribution to the training of educators, historians, the study of the past of Ukraine, the development of the Faculty and the University.
